SALEM -- Janice Corbin can be spotted traveling through Salem County in style.

Corbin, of Salem, gets around town riding a unique three-wheel vehicle known as a "Trikke."

The three-wheel adventurer has been Trikking now for five years -- riding a three-wheel cambering vehicle that combines exercise and recreational riding.

The N.J. resident discovered this special way of riding several years ago when she was sleeping on the couch one night. At 4 a.m., she saw an infomercial featuring the Trikke and, intrigued, ordered one for herself.

While she had no trouble getting on the three-wheeler, the challenge was figuring out how to actually ride it.

The Trikke moves by shifting weight back and forth on each leg. For three years, Corbin would take out the Trikke each summer, attempt to ride, then put it away.

It wasn't until the past couple years that she finally mastered her new workout tool.

"It makes a difference if you got music to kick to," Corbin said, demonstrating the movement.

When she finally learned to ride the Trikke, she took it and went for a long ride down Route 45 in Salem County, roughly five miles.

Corbin is always on the lookout for a new place to ride -- smooth pathways and near nature are preferred.

"That's when I can really go at it," she said, adding that her favorite route is parking near The Memorial Hospital of Salem County and trikking down to the Mannington Bridge.

"It's hard to learn but once you've got it, you've got it. It's hard to make it go -- it takes strength in the hips and shoulders, a technique you need to practice," Corbin said.

"It's fun exercise that doesn't feel like work. I Trikke because it's fun. When you get your music going, and find your places to trikke, it's great," she added.

Some of her other favorite places include Martlon and Battery parks in Salem County.

Corbin even travels as needed on her Trikke to the grocery store and bank.

On Aug. 15, Corbin joined 66 other Trikkers in Indianaopolis for "Trikke the Trail" -- she was the only rider from New Jersey and rode two laps equivalent to 5.8 miles.

"I just wanted to go and ride. I don't know anybody who Trikkes, so it's like meeting a new community. They all took care of me," Corbin said, smiling from ear to ear.

While away, Corbin rode through a city, down a lovely path along the river, and then participated in the Trikke the Trail event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"It was rough -- you have to zig-zag almost sideways to go up a hill."

"Trikking the Track was hard work, given the slant of the pavement. I imagined he stands full of screaming fans and realized I was being allowed access to areas most people will never have."

Afterward, she was involved in classes to learn how to improve her technique.

One day, Corbin said she wants to be a certified trikke trainer.

"It's just fun and I want to teach classes, maybe have a trikke-a-thon," she said.

But for now, Corbin is just enjoying her recreational riding as well as passing on the exercise routine to her niece, Enaye Morris, 10.

"My favorite part is it helps with exercise. I don't get a lot of exercise. I just like going down the hills and the breeze," her niece said.

Corbin hopes to stay keep herself and other active through her new hobby.

"My new motto is to move (myself) now so that I will be able to move later in life. As a community, we need to do all we can to combat obesity. I also heard a quote that the best exercise is one that you will do. As for me, I will Trikke," Corbin said.
