The law firm of Hoffman DiMuzio has allocated close to half a million dollars to its "Gift of the Heart" Community Scholarship Foundation. Forty-one graduating seniors from Gloucester and Salem County high schools have been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship for embodying the service ideals of the program. This week, the 2017 "Gift of the Heart" Hoffman DiMuzio Community Service Foundation recipients from Salem High School are Jimmy Johnson and Chloe Mulhorn.

Jimmy Johnson -- Community service is incredibly valuable both for those volunteering and the communities they seek to serve. Jimmy recalls the impact programs such as Youth on the Move had for him at a young age.

The trips he was able to take to various locations proved both informative and inspirational. The Youth on the Move program seeks to broaden the perspectives of children and instill a belief in their own capacity to succeed. Now as a volunteer, he has helped kids visit several historically black colleges and universities.

Additionally, Jimmy is a member of Salem high school's International Baccalaureate program. IB students are enrolled in the most academically rigorous courses offered by their school. As part of the program, students are required to complete service hours. Jimmy recalls the Salem pancake breakfast as being a particularly fun event, during which IB students served community members breakfast.

Jimmy is also a member of both the cross country and wrestling teams. Additionally he is involved in band and has a role in RAM theater's 2017 production.

Chloe Mulhorn -- To have a balanced high school experience, Chloe  believes service is integral. Throughout her high school experience, she has consistently been involved with the Interact and Rotary clubs. With these organizations, Chloe took part in holiday caroling at nursing homes, the preparation of rotary breakfasts, and chicken dinners. Additionally, as one of her family traditions, Chloe serves dinners at the Arc of Salem County, an organization dedicated to aiding those with disabilities.

Chloe  is also an International Baccalaureate student. As part of the program, she worked on a projected called "Teach and Learn India." The goal is to design and raise money for a classroom in an underfunded community abroad. This past year, Chloe and her classmates focused on fundraising for a girl's bathroom. By initiating this building process, the involved students hope to set an example for the contributing classes to follow.

Of all of the volunteer work with which she has been involved, Chloe has found tutoring to be the most rewarding. Her specialty is math. She considers the frequent review of various skills to be helpful and notes that "there's always a different way to solve the same problem."

Congratulations are extended to Jimmy Johnson and Chloe Mulhorn as well as their proud family and friends. Their community service embodies a Gift of the Heart.

Next week's featured recipients will be from Salem County Career & Technical High School.
