Ra’Mir Nock eyed up the defender, dipped his shoulder just a bit and prepared for impact.

The Salem running back welcomed the contact, initiating it and bouncing off the would-be tackler before making his way into the end zone.

The touchdown was the result of pure aggression, something Salem displayed time and time again Saturday afternoon against visiting Glassboro.

“When it’s one-on-one, don’t make him miss. Run right through him,” Nock said following Salem’s 44-0 victory in a West Jersey Football League Diamond Division matchup.

“We’re a physical team.”

Winners of four straight, Salem (4-1) brought a distinct toughness to both sides of the ball. The Rams allowed just 54 yards of offense in the first half, taking a 23-0 lead at the break. They would surrender just 92 total yards.

“Our defense is predicated off of old philosophies - playing physical, fast and aggressive,” said Salem coach Montrey Wright. “Those guys take on that challenge every week of being the more physical team on the field.

“We worked on the physicality in practice this week. We knew it would be a physical game because Glassboro has a good program. We wanted to make sure we put in our kids’ minds that we needed to be the more physical team on the field.”

The loss was the first for Glassboro (3-1) following wins over Pennsville, Bishop Eustace and Schalick. Eight first-half penalties for 70 yards certainly didn’t help its cause.

Salem wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard, scoring on its first two possessions. Ja’yon Mejias scored on a 37-yard pass from Jamael Bundy on the Rams’ third play of the game, while Nock’s 8-yard TD run gave the home team a 13-0 lead late in the opening quarter.

Mejias would block a punt, resulting in a safety midway through the second quarter. And on the ensuing possession, Bundy hit Derrick Turner on a 10-yard TD strike. Mejias pulled in the 2-point conversion on a nifty fake and Salem had its convincing halftime advantage.

“Glassboro is a team that could have slowed the game down on us. It was important to get out of the gate quickly and avoid that situation,” Wright said.

Bundy would go on to complete 13-of-17 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns. The senior quarterback competed all seven of his passes in the second half, hitting Turner on a 35-yard pass and younger brother Da'Shon Bundy on a 39-yard TD pass.

Jamael Bundy raised his season total to 1,055 yards and 17 touchdowns. Turner finished with four catches for 102 yards and two scores.

"We're relentless, everybody has bought in and no one is complaining," Bundy said. "Our running backs don't complain if the receivers are having a day, and the receivers don't complain if the running backs are. Everyone is on board.

“We like the tough, gritty games. We have no problem winning 7-6 or 44-0. It doesn’t matter. We’re going to play every game the same.”

Salem has outscored its last four opponents 208-20, with the last two wins by shutout.

“The brotherhood, the relentlessness, no quit … That’s what I love about them,” Wright said. “They stick together and fight. They’re all in.”
