To get started, you need to know what you are looking for -- A good place to start is in the Library Catalog. Click on either "OPAC" or "Library Catalog." Click on this icon for "One Search", and enter your subject/topic. The results will include books in our collection, as well as links to the databases, and a web search.
At the bottom of the LRC homepage is the "Salem High School Favorite Links" table. Find the subject area for your class (for example, "English") and click on it. Many of your teachers' favorite links have been listed here so that you can easily find them to complete class assignments.
In the "Database" table, "EBSCO magazine search" will provide full text to many scholarly articles. In the "Reference" table you will find a link entitled "Find Articles." Use the "Print" command on the "File" menu to print your articles.
You must work quietly and independently. Group work requires a pass from the assigning teacher. All the other school rules apply when in the library. That is, no headphones, no food and drink, no music or lyric websites, no games, etc. Please read the posted rules and ask questions about what you do not know. Above all, the library is a place for research and study; anything that prevents education from happening is anathema. (Look this word up in the library!)
Since Education is always the priority in the Library, study hall students who are using the library must have an educational purpose. If library staff requests that you take some action such as finding something to do or leaving a certain Internet site, then you should follow the request immediately. If a discussion or debate is needed please be prepared to leave the library, and accept appropriate disciplinary action. .
Students may use the Salem High School Learning Resource Center during lunch, study hall and immediately after school - with an appropriate pass; during class time students will use the library with their classroom teacher..
Library computers are for research on a curriculum related topic. Games and chat are not allowed. Inappropriate use of INTERNET resources will result in the loss of computer privileges according to the Appropriate Use Policy of the Salem City Schools.
A current Salem High School ID card is required for checking out materials. You may not use another student's ID or check out materials for another student. Please return materials as soon as you have finished with them. It is the student's responsibility to keep track of materials that they have checked out and return them by the date indicated.
There will be charges for lost or damaged materials at cost of replacement. Students owing a book may not check out more materials. Overdue books will be recorded on a students permanent record. Report cards will be held when an obligation is owed.
