GLOUCESTER – The Salem High School football team overwhelmed Gloucester behind the strong running of quarterback Shareef Jefferies and an avalanche of turnovers on Thursday night.

The Lions turned the ball over on five consecutive possessions in the first half with three interceptions and two fumbles on the way to a 30-0 Salem advantage at the break and went on to a 49-0 victory in West Jersey Football League Classic Division action.

Salem improved to 3-0, while Gloucester is 2-1.

The final interception bounced off a receiver’s hands for what should have been a touchdown pass and right into the waiting arms of Ramon Roots.

Jefferies carried eight times for 116 yards ands and two touchdowns in the first half. He opened the scoring on a 6-yard run – set up by his 32-yard scamper on third-and-11 – and finished the first-half scoring with a 22-yard run on fourth-and-1.

Teron Nance intercepted two passes, the first he returned 70 yards to the Gloucester 15 and set up Jonathan Taylor’s 12-yard TD run that made it 22-0 early in the second quarter.

Armani Justice added a 2-yard run to start the 22-point second-quarter onslaught.

The Rams didn’t stop at the half. Jefferies added his third TD run from 20 yards out on the first drive of the second half and Jonathan Taylor busted a 36-yard TD run to make it 43-0 before the end of the third quarter.

A 54-yard pass on fourth-and-10 from Keanen Cheeks to Adam Whitaker closed the scoring. Taylor had 19 carries for 144 yards and two scores, while Jefferies had 143 yards on 10 carries and three scores.
