South Jersey Times boys track All-Area Team, 2016

SOUTH JERSEY TIMES ALL-AREA BOYS TRACK AND FIELD TEAM, 2016

100-meter dash: Jonathan Taylor, Salem, jr.

Taylor had a phenomenal season, winning the 100 from the Salem County Championships (10.64) all the way up to the Meet of Champions (10.61). His 10.55 at the South Jersey, Group 1 meet was the best in the area. He ran a 10.75 in winning the state Group 1 title.

200-meter dash: Spenser Jarrett, Salem, sr.

Jarrett's 21.73 (second at the Group 1 meet) was the best time in the area. Jarrett (22.15) was second to teammate Jonathan Taylor (22.00) at sectionals. The Salem County champ (22.24) was 11th at the Meet of Champions (22.28).

400-meter dash: Edwyn Pierre, Williamstown, jr.

Pierre easily could slot in at the 110 or 400 hurdles, having finished 25th and eighth, respectively, at the Meet of Champions. However, he was just one of three area athletes to run the 400 under 50 seconds, when he went 49.72 to take second at the Gloucester County Championships.

800-meter run: Cosmo Pirozzi, Schalick, sr.

Consistency has made Pirozzi an all-star for the second year in a row in this event, in which he was the only area runner to go under 1:60 this season. He was the Salem County (1:56.40) and South Jersey, Group 1 champion (1:57.35), was fifth in Group 1 (1:56.37) and 18th at the Meet of Champions (1:57.43).
 
1,600-meter run: Samuel Gerstenbacher, Schalick, sr.

Gerstenbacher's 4:20.31 to take 17th at Meet of Champions was the best time in the area this season. The future Elizabethtown College runner finished first at the Salem County Championships (4:27.50), was second in South Jersey, Group 1 (4:26.64) and fifth in Group 1 (4:21.26).

3,200-meter run: Joshua Clark, Highland, sr.

Clark is a repeat All-Area selection in this event. He finished second at the Meet of Champions and his 9:06.70 was by far the best time in the area. The St. Joseph's University-bound standout was also first in South Jersey, Group 3 and at the Group 3 meet (9:10.77).

110-meter hurdles: Mikal Wright, Bridgeton, sr.

Wright ran the area's fastest time of the season in winning the Salem County title (14.30). He placed second at the South Jersey, Group 3 (14.63) and state Group 3 meets (14.39) and went on to finish ninth in 14.67 at the Meet of Champions.

400-meter hurdles: Jason Stefanski, Penns Grove, sr.

Stefanski fulfilled his goal of being a state champion when he won the Group 1 title in 54.15. He also won at the Salem County (57.64) and South Jersey, Group 1 meets (54.15). Stefanski was also a county and sectional champion in the 110 hurdles.

High jump: Markquese Bell, Bridgeton, jr.

Bell won the state Group 3 crown when he was the only athlete to clear 6-10. He also finished first at the Cumberland County Championships (6-0) and the South Jersey, Group 3 meet (6-6). The standout football player capped his season by finishing third at the Meet of Champions (6-6).

Long jump: Kimere Brown, Penns Grove, sr.

Brown took third at the Meet of Champions when he jumped 23-0¼, the area season best. The Temple University-bound football player was South Jersey, Group 1 champion at 22-8¾ and took second at 22-11 in Group 1 and at 20-8¼ at the Salem County Championships.
 
Triple jump: Tarik Robinson, Penns Grove, sr.

Robinson was one of three local athletes to clear 45 feet, and he did it three times. His 46-9½ gave him the state Group 1 title. His 45-8 netted him the South Jersey, Group 1 crown. He was also the Salem County champ (44-11½) and placed fifth at the Meet of Champions (46-0¾).

Discus: Jake Hallowell, Delsea, jr.

Once again, Hallowell gets the nod in this event. He was the only area athlete to clear 150 feet this season and his 156-7 was the area's best, putting him 15th at the Meet of Champions. He tossed 154-6 at the Group 3 meet for seventh. He was fourth in South Jersey, Group 3 (152-3) and second at the Gloucester County Championships (144-7).

Javelin: Andrew Burkhardt, Gloucester, sr.

No one in the area cleared 170 feet but Burkhardt, who went 176-10 to finish second in Group 1 after tossing 176-2 to win the South Jersey, Group 1 title. Burkhardt was also the Gloucester County champion at 166-6 and went on to place 24th at the Meet of Champions at 159-5.

Shot put: Sam Shinn, Kingsway, sr.

Shinn is another repeat All-Area honoree. Only three throws by area athletes went over 50 feet and Shinn had two: He went 52-5 to finish first at the Gloucester County meet and threw 53-3 to take fourth in South Jersey, Group 4. Shinn placed 15th at the group meet at 49-8.

Pole vault: Jarrod Brovero, Delsea, sr.

Brovero cleared 14-6 to win the Meet of Champions title, which put him into the running for Athlete of the Year. He also won at the Gloucester County Championships with a meet record of 14-7 and finished first at the South Jersey, Group 4 meet and second in Group 4, both at 14-0.

4x100-meter relay: Salem

Seniors Ramon Bentley and Spenser Jarrett and juniors Jamere Furbush and Jonathan Taylor ran the fastest area time of the season, 42.07, to finish third at the Meet of Champions. They set the meet record with a 42.48 to win the South Jersey, Group 1 meet and won the Group 1 title at 42.14.

4x400-meter relay: Deptford

Freshman Tyrece Brown and seniors Derrick Clement, Jahmir Ellis and Myles Davis posted an area season best of 3:21.67 to finish third at the state Group 2 meet. They were Gloucester County champions in 3:26.48 and finished 10th at the Meet of Chanmpions in 3:22.54.

4x800-meter relay: Highland

Seniors Joshua Clark, Jose Figueroa and Jason Leonardo and sophomore Ben Woodward became the only area team to run a sub-8:00 when they took the Group 3 title in 7:58.28. They were also Camden County Large School Division champions (8:01.80) and placed 27th at the Meet of Champions (8:15.57).
