From the Principal 2025

Dear Salem Middle School Families,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year at Salem Middle School! As Principal, I am honored to serve this vibrant community of learners, educators, and families. At SMS, we are committed to fostering academic excellence, student growth, and a positive school culture where all children feel valued, supported, and inspired to succeed. We will continue to have high expectations for academic achievement while providing rigorous curricula through innovative instruction.

Salem Middle School comprises grades three to eight. The third and fourth grade classes are in the traditional self-contained format, while the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades each form a loop. All teachers in all grade levels are highly qualified and are also content-certified in the subject matter they teach from grades five to eight. Our amazing staff is dedicated to providing a nurturing school community to support our children in achieving success.

Salem Middle School currently uses the following assessments to guide classroom instruction: Core Curriculum-based quarterly pre- and post-tests in literacy and math for all grade levels. In addition, we are implementing i-Ready Diagnostics for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Students will take the i-Ready assessment at the beginning and end of the year to measure growth and help tailor instruction based on individual student needs.

In the spring of 2026, students in grades 3–8 will be administered the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) in English Language Arts and Mathematics, along with the NJSLA Science in grades 5 and 8.

Several clubs and programs offered at Salem Middle School include: Spanish, Concert Choir, Band, Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Basketball, Cheerleading, Art Club, Chess Club, Library Club, Rite of Passage (Grade 8), Elite 10 (Grade 8), Little Ladies Club (Grades 3–5), Teenage Girls in Transition Club (Grades 6–8), Girl Scouts, Student Council, National Junior Honor Society, Academic League, Youth Leadership Institute, Focus on Education, VIP Program, and Odyssey of the Mind.

Through strong instruction, family partnership, and consistent progress monitoring, we are confident that every student will have the opportunity to thrive. We encourage families to stay involved by attending school events, monitoring student progress, and maintaining open communication with teachers and staff.

Together, we can ensure that Salem Middle School continues to be a place where students achieve academic success and grow into responsible, confident leaders of tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Let’s make it a great year!

Yours in education,

Mrs. Pascale E. DeVilmé
